HIERARCHY: NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE THE HERO

One of the most common mistakes in makeup design is trying to make every element impressive.

Strong eye.

Strong lip.

Strong contour.

Strong highlight.

Strong brow.

Strong lashes.

Strong skin.

When everything demands attention, nothing controls the composition.

Instead, establish hierarchy.

PRIMARY

Where should the viewer look first?

SECONDARY

Where should the eye travel next?

SUPPORT

Which elements exist only to support the composition?

A useful rule is:

HERO → SUPPORT → SILENCE

“Silence” is especially important.

Some areas need to remain visually quiet so that stronger areas have room to exist.

This is the makeup equivalent of negative space.
